Our Activities
 
1. Documentation and information section

The Center has started to operate by setting up the documentation and information section at KSL. Reading resources and publications are being collected and documented (including Supreme Court decisions related to child rights).

2. Youth Sensitization Program

The Center is organizing a youth sensitization program on the different issues of child rights such as interaction programme among youths, documentary presentation on the issues of child rights, to name a major few.

The Center shows documentaries on the child rights issue (and also child psychology and child development issues) every Monday at 2:00 pm at the documentation and information section to the students and faculty of the school and researchers of related areas. In February 2008, Children's Voices Against Violence Against Girls and Boys and Anuttarit Prasna (Unanswered Question) were shown. The first documentary focused on discrimination between girls and boys in school, family and in the law itself. The documentary shows the psychological and physical effects in the children of such discrimination and violence. The second documentary dealt with the situation and status of juvenile delinquency in Nepal.

The Center has scheduled an interaction program on child rights issues for the secondary and senior secondary school students once a week.

These types of activities have been effective in creating awareness among youths about the situation and rights of children in and across the South Asian Region.

3. Law school course on child rights

The Center has started reviewing the curriculum of law schools and other organizations on child rights. Students of LL.B. have been working as interns in the Center.

4. The Center established the "CRC-information board" which will display national and international news on child rights every month.

5. The center is currently studying the decision of Supreme Court related to children's' rights

Progress so far>

  • A well equipped office with sufficient space and furniture has been set up. This includes a program hall for weekly documentary show and a power point presentation.
  • Books related with human rights, child rights, child development and psychology have been purchased/
  • Internet Articles from prominent writers have been collected.
  • Reports, publications and audio-visual CDs and Cassettes are being collected from various governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions is being collected.
  • A list of Child Rights Organizations working in Nepal has been prepared and being updated.
  • National and International laws related to child rights have been complied.
  • A bibliography on child rights is being prepared. .
  • Review of the syllabus of all law schools and colleges has been carried out seeking their course on child rights.
  • A complete child statistics of Nepal is being prepared.
  • Free Legal Aid for children has been started. Recently center filed a case against the government authorities who has held three children illegally in jail with elders in Nepalgunj District.

Regular Weekly Programs have been lunched>

Documentary Show: Every Monday 2:00 pm onward there would be a documentary show related with child rights issues in the program hall of center. 25 persons would be benefited at a time.

Presentation on Child Rights: Every Sunday 2:00 pm onward there would be a presentation on the issues of child rights, development and psychology. Presentation will be followed by interaction and discussions. 25 persons would be benefited at a time. Venue would be the program hall of the center.

Updates of Events of CRC: Month of March and April, 08>

Addressing the problems which pose hindrances in safeguarding the rights of the child in Nepal as well as other countries in the region, is a major objective of CRC, and for this purpose CRC, in the month of March has started launching its activities for the cause. The center has identified that a proper networking system is very important to learn about the status of children, violation of their rights, and the emerging issues regarding their rights. Thus, to fulfill this need, CRC, with its three interns and a co-ordinator, has created a record book of the various organizations that are concerned with the child rights issues. Together with it, various materials, as books, booklets, Statistics, documents, pamphlets, posters, CDs, VCDs on child rights issues have been collected as resources for the CRC Library. Three Documentary shows, 'Children's Voice Against Violence Against Girls and Boys', 'Anuttarit Bal Aparadh', 'MASVAW-Changing the Courses, Men Voices for Gender Equality and Stopping Violence', have been shown in the CRC conference hall to 58 participants in total. Subsequent to each show, interesting discussions on child rights issues were held. Along with these, the review of national and international news and also book reviews, on child rights for the month of March and April has been done, with the regular updating of the CRC Information board. The national news were more focused on review of the urgent issued of child rights, as free education, health, right against exploitation, domestic child workers problems, etc. that are to be specially addressed by the upcoming constituent assembly. The CRC information brochure is now in progress.

Visit to different organizations to initiate institutional collaboration are being done. Also, the collection of Supreme Court verdicts relevant to child rights, has been commenced to build the resource of the center further. CRC was also actively involved in the launching of the Clinical Legal Aid Program, and now, it is collaborating with the Criminal Justice Center of KSL in a full-fledged level. It is aimed that the cases, particularly that, which will be brought about child rights issues, will be specially in close observation of CRC. The upcoming events at CRC include regular documentary shows about child rights, launching of awareness raising programs to school-going children, by inviting them for a program at KSL, an orientation for the KSL students about how co operation can be developed for building a community surveillance mechanism so that each student actively initiates to report child rights violation cases in our center, and also about the scope of enlarging this checking mechanism. CRC has been established with the vision of institutionalizing it as a very well set-up center for all child rights related issues. Our continuous progresses will be updated on monthly basis, in this website.

Updates of Events of CRC: Month of May, 08>

The core activity that KSL-CRC did in month of May are as follows :

  1. Student intern of KSL-CRC, Prabin Subedi from KSL filed a writ petition on May 21, 2008 for the release of three children illegally imprisoned in Nepalgunj prison with elder's prisoners as there was no child reform home in Banke District. Legal Aid Lawyers working in the CLEP pleaded on behalf of petitioner. The court has ordered for showing the cause of such imprisonment.
  2. Likewise KSL-CRC has started to workout in one of the major activity, i.e. Baseline survey about Child Rights situation in Nepal. In the research the center has projected to carryout research in 14 different area with help of 31 students as research assistant. The orientation about objective and research methodology has already been done by coordinator of KSL-CRC, Assist. Prof. Kapil Aryal.
  3. Student Intern, Ms. Kanchan Koirala working in Documentation desk continued the visit to various organization in the month of May too for the collection of the Resource and maintaining relation with the organizations.
    KSL-CRC also conducted the research about 'Impact Analysis of Glue Sniffing by Children in Thamel area of Kathmandu'.
  4. The regular program of documentary show is regularly conducted in Documentary hall. Due to exams and other activities, the number of audience is not so fine.
  5. The intern of KSL-CRC participated in paralegal training conducted by Clinical Legal Education Program, KSL

Updates of Events of CRC: Month of June, 08>

Baseline Survey on Child Rights situation in Nepal

Child Rights center has started the 'Baseline Survey on Child Rights situation in Nepal'. The Survey includes the research in fourteen different issues which will be done with thirty students as assistant researchers. The research has been started from 1st June 2008 and it takes two months.

KSL-CRC welcome if anyone is interested to volunteer in the Baseline Survey research or to make some contribution for the research. We request the interested to contact the KSL-CRC office or email to childrights@ksl.edu.np

By the end of research, contribution will be acknowledged through certification.

The Fourteen Areas for research are as follows:

  1. Strength and Weakness of Nepalese Laws Concerning the Rights of the Child
  2. Impact Analysis of the Activities of the Child Rights NGOs in Nepal
  3. Impact Analysis of the Nepal Government Initiatives for the Protection of Rights of the Child Rights
  4. Situation of the Children of Nepal (Statistics/Population survey)
  5. Situation of Juvenile Delinquency in Nepal
  6. Situation of Conflict-induced Displaced Children in Nepal
  7. Situation of Street Children in Nepal
  8. Survey of Orphanage homes in Nepal
  9. Situation of Child Labour in Nepal
  10. Situation of Domestic Child Workers in Nepal
  11. Media Projection and Child Rights
  12. Situation of Child Rights in Schools
  13. Child Rights Situation in Child Reform Homes
  14. Drug Abuse Situation among Child in Nepal

KSL-CRC also conducted the research about 'Impact Analysis of Glue Sniffing by Children in Thamel area of Kathmandu'. Similarly, KSL-CRC has been giving legal aid to the childrens and following up the cases of child rights violation through media

Likewise in month of June Clinical Legal Education Program in Collaboration with Child Rights Center have filed three Habeus Corpus writ in Supreme Court to Kathmandu Administration office which had practiced the illegal substantial detention to three children under fourteen year age.
