The Government
of Nepal has ratified
international
provisions related
to children’s
rights. National
plans of action
have been developed
on the basis of
those provisions
to protect children
from all sorts
of violence, abuse
and discrimination.
Many national
and international
organizations
have been established
in the country
to protect rights
of children. However,
children’s
rights to survival,
protection and
development are
being grossly
violated all over
the country by
the government,
parents and other
duty bearers.
In this context,
there was a desperately
felt need of a
strong Child Rights
Center.
Kathmandu School
of Law came
up with a concept
of establishing
“Child
Rights Research
and Resource
Center”
with the objective
for reviewing
Child Rights
enforcement
situation, dissemination
of information
and producing
Child Rights
sensitive human
resource in
the country.
Save the Children
Norway welcomed
this concept
and provided
support for
establishment
of the Center
taking into
account the
potentiality
for fulfilling
the existing
gap in the country.
It is too early
to evaluate
the Center but
the initial
functioning
of the Center
shows that it
is moving towards
the direction
of fulfilling
the set objectives.
This is a coordinated
effort among
like-minded
organizations
(Save the Children
Norway, Save
the Children
Sweden and UNICEF).
I strongly feel
that the Center
will be able
to fulfill the
existing gap
in the country.
I wish all
the best for
KSL in realization
of their objectives.
