- An honor for KSL: KSL Student being
awarded in Bangladesh
As a great achievement, KSL viewed
this year as a year of honor. LL.B. student
Mr. Ram Sharan Pokharel grabbed the opportunity
to win the Best Performance Trophy in
the ‘4th Human Rights Summer Schools’
program held at Comilla City in Bangladesh.
The program was organized by Dhaka University
from 18th to 30th December 2003.
A total of 50 law students from Bangladesh,
India, and Nepal took part in the two
weeks residential workshop. Dhaka University:
Faculty of Law, Raj Shai University, Chittogong
University, Islamiya University from Bangladesh,
West Bangal University, India, Kathmandu
School of Law (Purbanchal University)
Nepal participated in the program. There
was an intensive training on Human Rights
and Advocacy.
The objective of the program was to develop
a common understanding of Human Rights
among Human Rights teachers, advocates
and activists. There was an extensive
discussion on Human Rights education:
viz. expectation from Human Rights Lawyers,
Combating Violence against Human Rights
and other Human Rights issues in the regions.

- South Asian Law Schools’ Forum:
An initiation for regional cooperation
The year initiated a regional cooperation
among South Asian countries by formulating
South Asian Law School Forum. The school
organized the ‘Human Rights Training
and Curriculum Development Workshop’
from 3rd to 7th December, 03 in support
with Danish Institute for Human Rights
(DIHR), Denmark.
The core objective of the program was
to enhance expertise in the field of human
rights in the region of South Asia by
strengthening post-graduate human rights
education. The program created a forum
for exchange of experiences on human rights
teaching within the South Asian Countries.
Participants of the program included delegates
from India, Bangladesh, and Denmark along
with the teachers from Universities in
Nepal.
As an outcome of the seminar, a network,
“South Asian Law Schools’
Forum for Human Rights(SALS Forum)”
has been developed to promote exchanges
of ideas and experiences among South Asian
Law Schools. The forum aims to foster
an environment for active participation
of law teachers in building common human
rights jurisprudence in the region. The
program ended up with the formation of
a Consultative Committee to materialize
the formation of the forum. The Committee
comprised of Prof. D.N. Jauhar, India,
Prof. Usha Tandon, Delhi University, India,
Prof. Nomita Aggarwal, Dean, Lect. Geeta
Sekhon, Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha
University, India, Prof. Madhav P. Acharya,
KSL, Prof. Azizur Rahman Chowdhary, Dhaka
University, Mr. Nawaraj Pageni, Lecturer,
TU, Advocate Pooja Ahuluwalia, High Court
Delhi as the members. Associate Professor
Yubaraj Sangroula, KSL, had been accepted
as Member Secretary, and Dr. Lone Lindholt,
DIHR - as an External Advisor for the
Committee. KSL as a Secretariat had to
play instrumental role in coordinating
and facilitating all the activities of
the committee. |

- Professional Trainings on Juvenile Justice
KSL organized ‘Professional
Trainings on Juvenile Justice for Police
Personnel, Defence Lawyers and Civil Society
members in support with DIHR as a part
of the program entitled “Strengthening
the Juvenile Justice System in Nepal”.
The objective of the training programs
was to sensitize police officers, prosecutors,
civil society and media personnel on various
issues of Juvenile Justice including Diversion.
The program aimed to create a common platform
and common understanding among different
actors of the state for building mechanisms
to develop Juvenile Justice System as
an independent component of Justice System.
The participants of the program included
about 2 dozens of defence lawyers from
different regions, police personnel, human
rights activists, media personnel and
students. |

- SALS Forum for Human Rights: 1st conference
on Social Responsive Human Rights Legal
Education
The year established a uniform
Forum named as the South Asian Law Schools’
Forum for Human Rights(SALS Forum) by
the 1st Conference held from 3rd to 5th
June, 2004. The SALS Forum for Human Rights
was formed with a primary objective to
strengthen the quality of legal education
and promote exchange of ideas and experiences
among South Asian law schools and similar
institutions in matters of legal education
in general and human rights studies in
particular. Distinguished law faculties
from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan
and Sri Lanka attended the 3 days Conference
in Kathmandu Nepal. The Conference ended
up with the official establishment of
the SALS Forum and adoption of the Forum's
Charter that declared Kathmandu as the
venue of the Forum Secretariat. |

- Dignitaries felicitated
The year passed by the Felicitation
program to honor distinguished personalities
who have excelled in the field of law
and justice on Nov.10, 2003. The program
was followed by a Cultural Program. Dignitaries
were honored on the basis of their unwavering
commitments & contribution towards
legal profession. The honored figures
for Professional Excellence Award were
Laxman Prasad Aryal, former judge, Krishna
Jung Raimaji, Judicial Administrator of
Supreme Court Mr. Shree Prasad Pandit
Registrar, Supreme Court and Advocate
Sushila Karki. Prof. Madhav Prasad Acharya
has been honored for Academic Excellence
Award. Mr. Toran Bahadur Karki Vice Chancellor,
PU and Prof. Nomita Aggarwal, Dean, Guru
Govind Singh Indraprastha University were
invited as special guests for the occasion.
The honored personalities have kindly
agreed the accolade of being visiting
faculty at Kathmandu School of Law. KSL’s
progress report was disseminated at the
same occasion.

- Study Tour to India: The step to promote
regional legal
education
Astudy tour was carried out as
a part of academic observation program
for the few school students along with
Associate Prof. Geeta Pathak as a step
to promote regional legal education among
South Asian countries. The team visited
Law faculty of the Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha
University in India. The GGSIU, Faculty
of Law and Kathmandu School of Law have
agreed to jointly work for fostering academic
and research collaboration. The program
aimed to provide faculties and students
an access to the outreach programs &
empirical studies, to exchange opportunities,
sharing the ideas and experiences, teaching
methodologies, exchanging expertise etc
among different countries. During
the ten days visit, the group acquired
knowledge on teaching methodologies, institution's
environment and academic standards. |

- Seminar / Workshop Programs
During the year the school accentuated
its curricula on organizing seminars and
workshops to develop the interactive ability
of its students..
– Workshop on Research Methods and
Development of Research Proposal
To train the students on research methodology
and preparing proposals, two workshops
were organized on Proposal Writing for
LL.M and LL.B. fourth year students.
– Seminar Classes
for LL.B. level
Seminar classes were organized for LL.B.
level as a regular academic curricula
of the school. The seminars aimed to provide
added practical knowledge on all the subjects
for LL.B. students.
– A two day
Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights
and Curriculum Development
The school in support with the American
Center organized ‘Workshop on Developing
a Curriculum for IPR in Nepal, especially
in the light of TRIPS compatibility and
the drafting of the new Industrial Property
Act’ at the school premises. The
workshop was planned, considering the
lack of competent expertise on IPR and
the need to develop the curriculum for
LL.M. program. The workshop discussed
on existing LLB. curriculum on IPR and
proposed draft LL.M. curriculum and methods
of teaching. The draft curriculum has
been expected to be catalytic to produce
expert human resource in the field of
IPR.

- Media Program
KSL launched an on-air debate program
on ‘Constitution’ in Metro
F.M.(106.7MHz), a local station in town.
In cooperation with Kathmandu Metropolitan
City the program was aired with an objective
to develop academic discussion with different
perspective on the present context of
the Constitution. |
