Human Rights Training and Curriculum Workshop

As a preliminary program for establishing SALS Forum, the program was organized from 3-6 December 2003 at Kathmandu School of Law. To develop stronger ties among the legal institutions in the South Asian region to enhance expertise in the field of human rights, and thus build a regional partnership among them. The program aimed to enhance the capacity of human rights of teachers to teach at graduate as well as the post-graduate level.

Conference on South Asian Law Schools' Human Rights Forum
Kathmandu School of Law organized 1st Conference on “South Asian Law Schools’ Human Rights Forum” for Social Resposive Human Rights Legal Education from 3rd to 5th June, 2004 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Conference officially constituted the “South Asian Law Schools Forum for Human Rights” (SALS Forum). A group of 46 law teachers from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Srilanka participated in the Conference with a view to develop a common regional understanding and perspective on legal education and the human rights jurisprudence and to develop a common platform for future collaboration.

Annual Conference
The first annual conference on South Asian Law Schools' Forum for Human Rights (SALS) was concluded with a successful juncture of collaboration among law institutions from South Asian Countries, SALS member countries and other human rights promoters from 29th October to 2nd November 2004 in Delhi India. The conference was sponsored by SALS Forum Indian Chapter.

The conference was based on the topic "Social Auditing of Legal Education with special reference to Human Rights". Country presentations were made to address the problems and issues of the Human Rights. 5 papers were presented by Indian representatives on College ragging, HIV/Aids issues, Difficulties in framing of H.R. Curriculum in Universities, Women’s Rights and Child Rights and Development of HR legislation and Child Rights. The inaguration session of the Conference was chaired by Prof. Dr. Nomita Aggarwal, Dean, Law Faculty, Delhi University. Prof. Aggarwal is the Chair Person of the Forum.

Likewise Bhutan had prepared a Presentation focusing on Human Rights issues in Bhutan.

Associate Prof. Yubaraj Sangroula, General Secretary, SALS Fourm on behalf of Nepal made a presentation on "Community Responsive Legal Education for Community Responsive Legal Professionalism", Prof. Mizanur Rahman from Bangladesh shared his knowledge and ideas on Human Rights and Social Auditing of Legal Education in Bangladesh: Why, When and How ?

The presentation was followed by screening of two documentary films on Human Rights, one about a Rape victim and the other on a women victim. Active discussion on the documentary took place thereafter. Video Conferences on How HR education should be taught in Universities were organized in the American Center and British Council at Delhi. Meanwhile, Mr. Sangroula made the observation visits in Indraprastha University, Law Faculty and Vivekananda Institute of Law and Legal Studies .
