Since its inception in 1999, Kathmandu
School of Law is committed to transform
legal education in Nepal.
It has passed its sixth year with many
important accomplishments and
significant outcomes. This year
we brought out the first batch
of our LL.B. students in the market
with excellent result in the Bar
Council Examination. The same
year we witnessed the high quality
applicants and an impressive class
in LL.B. first year attracting
students from some of the country's
most outstanding schools and colleges.
In the pretext of increasing internal
conflicts and severe human rights
violation, we pioneered in introducing
a one year interdisciplinary Masters'
Degree Course on Human Rights
and Conflict and International
Humanitarian Laws for the first
time in South Asia to prepare
qualified human resources to contribute
in these sectors.
KSL, this year too, renewed its
commitment to being proactive
in the legal education to prepare
leaders in the practice of law,
public and community service.
We dedicated ourselves to provide
enlightenment to the legal profession
and to foster an accessible, fair,
and reliable system of justice.
We have implemented experimental
models of teaching, which include
substantive coursework followed
by courses where the student actually
applies what was learned. In striving
to promote our community of learning,
this year we initiated a series
of students' presentations. In
the program, students presented
their research and writings on
substantive topics in the law
and social science. The purpose
was to highlight students' scholarly
endeavors and to allow them to
share their work with the entire
school community.
We strive to provide the necessary
programs and opportunities for
the exposure of our students nationally
and internationally and enable
them to fully compete with their
peers in the region. Our students'
involvement in co-curricular and
extracurricular activities is
impressive and among our greatest
sources of pride. KSL, this year
too, has maintained its tradition
of continuous participation in
different national and international
interaction and academic programs
and marked excellence in the region
by receiving Gold Medal Award
in Regional Moot Court Competition
and Academic Excellence Award
in 6th Human Rights Summer School
Program.
Legal education is a part of social
science, and therefore no legal
education can ignore the socio-economic
and political development of society.
Therefore, KSL directed its efforts
to the development of the nation
with functional democracy and
rule of law. It took various initiatives
in transformation of conflict
through enhancing democratic and
constitutional values. Establishment
of Peace Negotiation Resource
Centre (PNRC) and launching of
civic education program through
radio and television are some
of our visible efforts for enlarging
the roles and responsibilities
of the individuals and civil society
in order to promote democracy,
constitutionalism and rule of
law. KSL introduced the concept
of 'Inclusive Democracy"
which not only reflected on the
need of 'consolidation of democracy
and constitutionalism' for transformation
of the conflict, but also emphasized
on the need of 'inclusion of economic
and social democracy, benefiting
all segments of the population'
for successful transformation
of violent conflict. We initiated
a massive advocacy on inclusive
democracy and the need of new
constitution, and we are proud
that it has now become a common
agenda of political parties and
civil society.
Along with the academic progress
and advancements, this year we
were able to achieve national
reputation through enhancement
of academic collaboration with
many national and international
organizations. In this course,
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
was signed with University School
of Law and Legal Studies, New
Delhi to develop academic partnership
to strengthen quality education
and promotion of Human Rights
in the respective countries. Similarly,
MoU was signed with Bangladesh
Legal Aid Service Trust, Bangladesh
and Legal Aid Services, West Bengal
to provide legal aid to the indigent
citizens of Nepal, Bangladesh
and India in the respective countries.
A series of timely faculty/guest
panels and special events, such
as talk program with British Ambassador,
Charge d' Affairs of Embassy of
Denmark, representative from Office
of the United Nation's High Commissioner
for Human Rights and Delegation
of the European Commission to
Nepal have definitely contributed
to enrich students' academic standard
and broaden their intellectual
horizons. We anticipate a continued
high level of collaboration with
other schools and universities
in future.
We acknowledge that our donors
are responsible for our most successful
comprehensive campaign, and for
the ever-increasing endowments
that support our numerous educational
and co-curricular programs and
scholarships. Engagement in constructive
and academic cooperation with
Nepal Police, Judiciary, Attorney
General's Office and Nepal Bar
Association and other institutions
such as National Police Academy,
Judicial Academy, and Judicial
Service Training Centre as well
as many INGOs and NGOs was also
inspiring. On behalf of KSL, I
sincerely thank you all for your
generosity and commitment and
look forward to your continued
support as we lead the way in
legal education.
Kathmandu School of Law (KSL)
is now entering in its seventh
year. It is our priority at KSL
to further our progress achieved
in the previous academic years
and constantly improve our programs
and learning environment. As in
previous years, we continue to
build upon our successes, strive
to accomplish new initiatives,
and address the numerous challenges
facing law and society today.
We remain committed as ever to
attracting and retaining as one
of the best law school in the
region and to ensuring the opportunity
of qualified students to attend
our school. However, we could
not have achieved the prominence
we now enjoy, nor could we hope
to realize our ambitions for the
future without continued support
and dedication of our counselors,
teachers, staffs and students.
We are grateful to all who supported
us in our constant pursuit of
excellence. As we strive to provide
our students with superior services
and academic environment, we need
their continuous dedication and
support in the days to come. With
optimism and dedication, we strive
to continue our tradition of excellence
for a bright future for our students
and our school.
Thank You.
